The Folder Redirection Feature Does Not Function

Article ID: 274789

Article Last Modified on 3/1/2007

APPLIES TO

  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional Edition

This article was previously published under Q274789

SYMPTOMS

If you enable your computer's Folder Redirection feature for a folder, such as, My Documents, and that folder is also available offline, the following behavior may occur:

  • If you view the properties of the My Documents folder by right-clicking My Documents and clicking Properties, the target specified is the old network location for the My Documents folder.
  • The synchronization of the changes made to the file, or files, in the My Documents folder while offline is unsuccessful. When the synchronization is attempted, you may receive the following error message:

Offline Files (\\Server\share on Server): Unable to connect to '\\Server\share.' The network name cannot be found.

CAUSE

This behavior may occur because you made changes to a file or files in the redirected folder while offline and those changes have not been synchronized with the network version. If the original network version of the redirected folder is not available to synchronize the changes, the folder is unable to be redirected to a new network location.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this behavior, you must make the previous network location of the redirected folder available and enable the offline files to be synchronized. When the offline files are synchronized, the folder can be redirected to a new location.

If the original network location of the redirected files cannot be returned online, reset the offline files cache or database on each client that is affected.
