SYMPTOMS

When Word automatically recovers a document from a previous session of Microsoft Word, macros contained in the document are enabled, and no macro warning message is displayed.

CAUSE

When Microsoft Word starts, it checks the following locations for AutoRecover (*.asd) files but does not check the files for macros:

  • The Windows folder, as specified by your TEMP environment. To determine your TEMP folder, follow these steps:
    1. In Microsoft Word, click About Microsoft Word on the Help menu.
    2. Click System Info.
    3. On the Tree tab, click to expand the Software Environment folder.
    4. Click to select Environment Variables.

  • The AutoRecover files path, as specified on the File Locations tab (on the Tools menu, click Options).


RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, install the Word Mail Merge Security Update. This update is designed to patch Microsoft Office 2000 Service Release 1 (SR-1) installations. To install the Word Mail Merge Security Update, follow these steps:

  1. Download the Wrdacc.exe file from the following Microsoft Web site:
  2. After you download the updated security patch, double-click the Wrdacc.exe file to start the installation program. Click Yes to the following message:

    This program will install the Word Mail Merge Security Update. Do you want to continue?

  3. Click Yes to accept the License Agreement.
  4. After the update is installed, click OK to the following message:

    The update was applied successfully.

NOTE: If you attempt to install this update on a system that already is updated, you receive the following message:

This update has already been installed.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was corrected in the latest Microsoft Word 2000 update. Please see the "Resolution" section of this article for more information.

MORE INFORMATION

After you install this update, the Macro Warning dialog box will be displayed to allow you to either enable macros or disable macros when Microsoft Word attempts to open an AutoRecover (*.asd) file.
