Computer Hangs When You Dismount an NTFS Volume

SYMPTOMS

After you dismount an NTFS volume, your computer may become unresponsive, or it may stop responding (hang).

CAUSE

This problem can occur if NTFS does not release the lock to the system bitmap file-control block.

RESOLUTION

A supported fix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Apply it only to computers that are experiencing this specific problem.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Windows NT 4.0.
