OL2000: Outlook Cannot Open an Item Marked Private After You Move It to a Personal Folder

SYMPTOMS

If you are trying to open a message that is marked "private" and that has been moved to a personal folder file (.pst) either by a rule or manually, you receive the following error message:

Can't open this item.

RESOLUTION

A supported fix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Apply it only to computers that are experiencing this specific problem. This fix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, Microsoft recommends that you wait for the next Microsoft Office 2000 service pack that contains this hotfix.
