Computer Hangs During Startup with a PC Card Modem on a Japanese Model Toshiba Portege34x0

SYMPTOMS

When you restart your Japanese model of the Toshiba Protege 3410 laptop computer or insert a PC Card (R2) modem, your computer may stop responding (hang).

CAUSE

This issue is specific to Toshiba computers because their PCI internal modem requires legacy resources when the computer starts. At startup, Windows 2000 scans the PCI bus by a certain order. When Windows 2000 detects a PC Card modem before a PCI internal modem, Windows 2000 assigns legacy modem resources to the PC Card modem even if the resources are reserved by the Basic Input/Output System (BIOS). After this occurs, Windows 2000 cannot assign reserved resources to the PCI internal modem, and the computer may stops responding.

RESOLUTION

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Microsoft Windows 2000. This problem was first corrected in Windows 2000 Service Pack 2.
