SYMPTOMS

When you try to connect to a chat session by using Microsoft SideWinder Game Voice 1.0, you may receive the following error message:

Can't connect to the session.

CAUSE

This issue may occur if you are running firewall, network address translation (NAT), proxy, or other Internet router software on your computer or local area network.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, open the TCP/IP ports that are required to use the Game Voice software.

You may have to forward inbound packets sent to these ports to a particular IP address in your home or private network.

The Game Voice software uses the same ports as DirectPlay programs.

Required ports for the Game Voice software

Open the following ports to use the Game Voice software through a firewall, proxy, or NAT:

  • Initial TCP Port 47624 (inbound and outbound).
  • Subsequent TCP Ports 2300-2400 (all ports in this series, inbound and outbound).
  • Subsequent UDP Ports 2300-2400 (all ports in this series, inbound and outbound).

Note If the NAT does not distinguish between UDP and TCP ports, enable IP traffic on ports 2300-2400 and 47624.

Required port for MSN Messenger

The required port that you need to open for MSN Messenger to function properly with the Game Voice software is:

  • TCP Port 1863

If you need to forward packets

If you need to forward packets through your firewall, proxy, or NAT, use a specific IP address for the computer on which you want to run the Game Voice software.

If you are the host

If you are the host, make sure that you configure the Game Voice software to host from behind your NAT, proxy, or firewall:

  1. Start the Game Voice software, and then click Game Voice Settings.
  2. On the Setting page, click Advanced.
  3. Under Host Network Address, click to clear the Automatically Select Best Adapter (Recommended) check box.
  4. In the box to the left of the IP address, click NAT/Proxy.

Note The IP address may be displayed as 0.0.0.0.

  1. Type your external IP address in the IP address box, and then click OK.
