Apparent Handle Leak in Inetinfo When the Smarthost Setting Is Incorrect

SYMPTOMS

You might observe an ever-increasing number of handles for the Inetinfo process and an ever-increasing number of files in the Inetpub\Mailroot\Queue folder. These symptoms occur when mail is sent via ASP scripts using server.createobject("cdonts.newmail"), the Application Protection setting is set to High on the Home Directory tab in the IIS Administrator Web site properties, and the SMTP virtual server's Smarthost setting is incorrect.

CAUSE

This is caused by an invalid Smarthost setting.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, correct the Smarthost setting:

  1. Start the Internet Information Services snap-in.
  2. Click the appropriate server.
  3. Right-click the default SMTP virtual server, and then click Properties.
  4. Click the Delivery tab.
  5. Click Advanced.
  6. Correct the fully qualified domain name (FQDN) and Smarthost setting.
  7. Click OK to close all the dialog boxes.

To resolve this issue download and install Windows 2000 Service Pack 2 fro the following link:

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Internet Information Services 5.0.
