SYMPTOMS

If you have a Universal Serial Bus (USB) keyboard installed on a computer with USB Legacy support enabled in the Basic Input/Output System (BIOS), the computer may occasionally stop responding (hang) while it is starting up (while the Windows logo screen is displayed). Under typical conditions, such hangs occur very rarely (usually only once every hundred or more times).

CAUSE

This problem can occur if a System Management interrupt (SMI) occurs during a very narrow time period during Windows startup while Windows is sizing the Base Address registers for the Universal Serial Bus (USB) controller if the USB controller is already enabled.

RESOLUTION

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that this article describes. Apply it only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem.

To resolve this problem, contact Microsoft Product Support Services to obtain the hotfix. For a complete list of Microsoft Product Support Services telephone numbers and information about support costs, visit the following Microsoft Web site:

Note In special cases, charges that are ordinarily incurred for support calls may be canceled if a Microsoft Support Professional determines that a specific update will resolve your problem.
