This article was previously published under Q272883

SYMPTOMS

When you insert a list into a workbook, the data in the selected cells is shifted down one row to accommodate the list's column headings. If data located in the list is being used as source data for a chart, the chart may display the data incorrectly.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur because the reference for the chart's data series is not adjusted after the source data is shifted down one row to accommodate the insertion of the list's column headings.

WORKAROUND

To work around this behavior, use one of the following methods:

  • Create the list first, type the data in the list, and then create the chart, using the data inside the list.
  • Edit the data series so that it refers to the correct cell references; to do so, follow these steps:
    1. Click to select the chart.
    2. On the Chart menu, click Source Data.
    3. In the Source Data dialog box, under Data range, type the correct cell reference that contains the data for the chart, and then click OK.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

If the source data is supposed to be outside the list, avoid placing the list to the left or right of the chart's source data, and leave at least one row between the list and any source data below it.
