SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to copy and paste a selection into the New Row in a list object, you receive the following error message:

The selected cells on the worksheet are conflicting with the List Manager.

  • If you are selecting cells and the selected range overlaps the List Manager, either select a non-overlapping range or move the List Manager out of the way.
  • If you are trying to insert cells, make sure that the List Manager is not in the way of shifted cells. Either move the List Manager or insert cells on another part of the worksheet.

When you clear this message, Excel may display the following alert:

Microsoft Excel cannot paste the data.

This behavior occurs under the following conditions:

  • You press ESCAPE to cancel the copy operation before you attempt to paste the selection.

-and-

  • There is more than one row in the Copy area or there are more columns in the Copy area than in the list object.

CAUSE

If the selection that you want to paste requires the list to grow, the operation succeeds with an internal (marquee selection) paste operation, but not with an external paste operation from the Mac OS Clipboard.

WORKAROUND

To work around this behavior, use the sizing handle on the bottom right corner of the list object to expand the list to accommodate the Copy area, and then paste the selection into the New Row.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
