SYMPTOMS
When you attempt to install Windows 2000 Service Pack 1 (SP1), you may receive the following error message:
CAUSE
This behavior can occur if the Administrators group has been removed from the "Backup Files and Directories" user right.
NOTE: A similar error message may appear when you attempt to install a supported fix (hotfix).
RESOLUTION
To resolve this issue:
- Click Start, click Run, type secpol.msc, and then press ENTER.
- Double-click Local Policies.
- Double-click User Rights Assignment.
- Double-click Back up Files and directories.
- Click Add, and then double-click the Local Administrators group
- Click OK.
NOTE: If the computer is part of a domain, you must edit the policy that is being enforced on the computer. This policy might be set at the site, domain, or organizational unit level. You may need to restart the server or force an immediate policy refresh for the change to take effect.
