SYMPTOMS

While you are installing, or upgrading to the Intel AT Attachment (ATA/100) drivers (version 6.01.0), your computer may stop responding (hang) intermittently, or stop responding altogether.

This problem has been observed on computers that are equipped with the Intel 82801BA I/O Controller Hub (ICH2). This device may be found under the System Devices node on the Device Manager tab in the System tool of Control Panel. The text label for the device is typically:

Intel(r) 82801BA Ultra ATA Storage Controller


CAUSE

This problem can occur with several virtual device drivers (VxDs) that are used by Microsoft Backup (MSBackup), or Seagate Backup Exec, for use with Seagate tape backup devices. The version numbers of the two files are shown below.
Microsoft Backup:

  • Drvwppqt.vxd Version 1.0.0.1
  • Drvwq117.vxd Version 1.0.0.1

Seagate Backup Exec:

  • Drvwppqt.vxd Version 3.05.13a
  • Drvwq117.vxd Version 3.05.13a


RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, both files must be renamed, or removed for the installation to complete successfully; removal of just one is not sufficient.

To do this, follow these steps:

NOTE: Do not perform the following steps if you have a tape backup device that is connected to a parallel (LPT) port on your computer. If this is the case, see the "More Information" section of this article.

  1. Restart your computer (if you are currently experiencing the installation problem).
  2. Click Start, point to Find, and then click Files Or Folders.
  3. In the Named box, type drvwppqt.vxd;drvwq117.vxd, and then click Find Now.
  4. Rename all instances of the files by changing the file name extension. To rename a file, right-click it, click Rename, modify the extension to "vxx", or some other value that is not used by Windows, and then press ENTER.
  5. Restart your computer.

If you have an OEM version of Windows, which is generally supplied with a new computer, the indicated files are already on the system. This is not the case for retail installations of Windows 98 Second Edition, or Windows Millennium Edition (those not supplied with a new computer). Please see the article that is noted in the "References" section below for more information.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

The Drvwppqt.vxd, and Drvwq117.vxd files are installed if Microsoft Backup is installed, and is used to communicate with parallel-port tape backup devices. Uninstalling Microsoft Backup will not remove the files.

The files may also be installed as a part of the Seagate Backup Exec software. If this is this case, renaming, or deleting the files may interfere with proper functioning of the Seagate Backup software, especially if you are using a parallel-port tape backup device.
