This article was previously published under Q272368

SYMPTOMS

When you select a clip in Microsoft Windows Movie Maker, you may receive the following message:

The file drive:\location\file name cannot be found would you like to browse for it?

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if you delete the source media file, move it to another location or drive, or if you import the file from a removable storage device (CD-ROM, removable hard disk, and so on), and then disconnect or remove the device.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this behavior:

  1. Locate the source file if it has been removed.
  2. Re-attach the removable media on which the source file is stored.
  3. Restore the source file if it has been deleted.

MORE INFORMATION

When you import a file into Windows Movie Maker, it is cataloged in the Collections database (Windows Movie Maker.col). This process does not make a copy of the source content or modify it in any way.
