SYMPTOMS

You computer may stop responding (hang) for several hours while the Preparing Network Connections dialog box is displayed.

CAUSE

This problem occurs when all of the following conditions are met:

  • The computer is a WIndows 2000-based domain controller.
  • The computer uses network basic input/output system (NetBIOS) scopes.

    NOTE: To confirm this, see the following registry key:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\NetBT\ScopeID

  • The scope ID is ignored while the session is created.


RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Windows 2000. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was first corrected in Windows 2000 Service Pack 3.

To remove the NetBIOS scope:

  1. Restart your computer.
  2. During the Startup procedure, press F8 when you are prompted to start the Windows Recovery console.
  3. Start Regedt32.exe.
  4. Delete the NetbiosScope value in the following registry key:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\CurrentControlSet\Services\Netbios\Parameters

  5. Restart the computer.
