SYMPTOMS

Zone Transfer information for any Active Directory-integrated Domain Name System (DNS) zones that begin with the underscore (_) character is lost after you reboot the domain controller.

CAUSE

This problem can occur because the Active Directory-integrated zones are not completed in the correct order, and the relevant configuration information for the zones with an underscore character is not loaded correctly when the Windows 2000 Server-based computer starts.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Windows 2000. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

The English-language version of this fix should have the following file attributes or later:

Date Time Version Size File name
   -------------------------------------------------------
   5/8/2001 12:16p 5.0.2195.3585 324,368 Dns.exe

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was first corrected in Windows 2000 Service Pack 3.

MORE INFORMATION

Note that this problem does not apply to any other DNS zones or to any zones that are not Active-Directory integrated. This problem occurs only with those zones that begin with the underscore character. View the following table for more information and examples.

Zone Name Zone Type Affected
Mannion Active Directory-integrated Not Affected
_Mannion Active Directory-integrated Affected
Hartill Standard primary Not Affected
_Hartill Standard primary Not Affected

NOTE: You can use the underscore character as specified in Request for Comments (RFC) 2181.

On a Windows 2000-based domain controller with DNS, there are typically four DNS containers that begin with the underscore character (_tcp, _udp, _sites, and _msdcs). These containers are very important to the replication mechanism for Windows 2000. Do not modify these containers.
