SYMPTOMS

When you run Microsoft Reader, you may experience one or both of the following symptoms:

  • Graphics and colors may appear distorted.
  • Text may not be properly displayed.


CAUSE

This behavior can occur if your Microsoft Windows display settings are incorrect, or if the video driver for your video adapter is damaged or outdated.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, use the following methods in the order in which they are presented.

Adjust the Microsoft Windows Display Settings

To adjust the Windows display settings, use the appropriate method for your version of Windows.

Microsoft Windows 95 or Microsoft Windows 98

  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  2. Double-click Display.
  3. Click the Settings tab.
  4. Move the Desktop Area or Screen Area slider to the 800 x 600 pixels setting.
  5. In the Color Palette or Colors box, click High Color (16 bit).
  6. Click OK.
  7. If you are prompted to restart the computer, click Yes.

Microsoft Windows NT 4.0

  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  2. Double-click Display.
  3. Click the Settings tab.
  4. Move the Desktop Area slider to the 800 x 600 pixels setting.
  5. In the Color Palette box, click 65536 colors, and then click Test.
  6. Click OK, and then click Yes.
  7. Click OK, and then close Control Panel.

If the issue continues to occur, proceed to the next method.

Obtain an Updated Video Driver

Contact the manufacturer of your video adapter for information about how to obtain and install the latest version of the video driver for your video adapter.

If the issue continues to occur, proceed to the next method.

Adjust the ClearType Text Settings in Microsoft Reader

To adjust the ClearType text Settings in Microsoft Reader:

  1. Start Microsoft Reader.
  2. Click Guidebook at the bottom of the screen.
  3. Click Quick Settings on the cover page.
  4. Click Adjust ClearType.
  5. Follow the on screen instructions to adjust the ClearType text settings.

If the issue continues to occur, proceed to the next method.

Reduce the Graphics Hardware Acceleration

To reduce the graphics hardware acceleration:

  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  2. Double-click System.
  3. On the Performance tab, click Graphics.
  4. Move the Hardware acceleration slider until it is one notch to the right of None (the Basic acceleration setting).
  5. Click OK, and then click Close.
  6. When you are prompted to restart your computer, do so. If you are unable to restart your computer successfully:

    1. Press and hold down the CTRL key when you see the Starting Windows 98 message (in Microsoft Windows 98) or press F8 when you see the Starting Windows 95 message (in Microsoft Windows 95) on the screen.
    2. Select Safe Mode from the Startup menu.
    3. Repeat steps 1 through 6, but in step 4 move the Hardware Acceleration slider back to its original position.
