XADM: How to Generate an ADC Dump

Q270633

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server

SUMMARY

When you run the ADCdump utility successfully, it provides an Adcdump.txt file as output, which shows information about a specific object such as a recipient (user, distribution list, contact). The information includes all attributes for the object as they exist in the Microsoft Exchange Server 5.5 directory and in Microsoft Windows 2000 Active Directory. You can use it to compare object attributes as they exist in two directories. The ADCdump utility can be useful in troubleshooting non-delivery receipt (NDR) problems as well as in other troubleshooting tasks.

ADCdump is only helpful if the object is replicated into Exchange 2000 by the Active Directory Connector (ADC). ADCdump can show the missing attributes between the Active Directory object and Exchange Server 5.5 object. If the object was created in Active Directory or if it was moved from Exchange Server 5.5 into Active Directory by using the Exchange System Manager Move command, ADCdump may not be helpful. For looking at the attributes of native Active Directory objects, use the LDP utility.

ADCdump is included in the Exchange 2000 Resource Kit.

MORE INFORMATION

To get the Adcdump.txt file:

  1. Copy the ADCdump.exe utility anywhere on the local drive on the Exchange 2000 server, and start it.

NOTE: It must be on an Exchange 2000 server or it will not run.

  1. After it starts, ADCdump divides the screen into two columns: Exchange Server 5.5 on the left, and Windows 2000 Active Directory on the right. Use the default settings unless you know what each setting is for and what you are trying to do.
  2. Click Select CA to get a list of all Connection Agreements in the Exchange 2000 organization.
  3. Click the Connection Agreement that was used to replicate the Recipient object into Exchange 2000, and then click Select. The Connection Agreement field is populated.
  4. Click the Test buttons on both columns. They should both give you a Success message. Click OK.
  5. Click Add Entry on the Exchange Server 5.5 column. A Select Entry box appears. In the Search for box, type the recipient name you want the dump file for, and then click Search. Click the result, and then click Add. The recipient is added to the Entries to dump field.
  6. Click Add Entry on the Windows 2000 Active Directory side, and then repeat step 6.
  7. After you have the same recipient object populated on both sides, click Do it Baby! at the bottom. The Adcdump.txt file is saved on your desktop, by default. If you want to change the location to a different drive or folder, click the button on the right side of the Output file field.
  8. Open and analyze the ADCdump file for possible missing attributes.
