SYMPTOMS

After you install Veritas Backup Exec Desktop Edition version 4.4.1, Windows 2000 Professional may stop responding (hang) during shutdown.

CAUSE

This behavior is caused by an issue with the Backup Exec device driver.

RESOLUTION

Please contact Veritas for an updated version of this driver.

MORE INFORMATION

The Veritas patch updates the Drvmcdb.sys file, which is located in %SystemRoot%\System32\Drivers folder.

To install the patch:

  1. Locate the original Drvmcdb.sys file, and then rename it to Drvmcdb.old.
  2. Copy the new driver (after you download it from the Veritas Web site) to the same location.
  3. Restart the computer.
  4. Start Backup Exec.
  5. Shut down the computer to make sure that the problem is resolved.

Note that the hang at shutdown may occur one more time after you install the new driver. You must restart the computer to cause the new file to be used.
