SYMPTOMS

When you close a workbook in the French version of Excel 2000, you receive the following message:

Do you want to save the changes you made to { ?
Microsoft Excel recalculates formulas when opening files last saved by an earlier version of Excel.

The { character in the message is supposed to be the workbook name.

CAUSE

This problem occurs when you do the following:

  1. You create a workbook in the French version of Microsoft Excel 97.
  2. You open the workbook in the French version of Microsoft Excel 2000.
  3. You close the workbook.


RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Microsoft Office 2000. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was first corrected in Microsoft Office 2000 Service Pack 2.

Steps to Reproduce the Problem

  1. In the French version of Excel 97, create a new Excel workbook.
  2. In any cell, type a formula, such as the following:

    =""

  3. Save and close the workbook.
  4. Open the workbook in the French version of Excel 2000.
  5. Close the workbook or quit Excel 2000.

You receive the following message:

Voulez-vous enregistrer les modifications apportes a { ? Microsoft Excel recalcule ds l'ouverture les formulas des fichiers dont la derniere sauvegarde a t effectue sur une version antrieure d'Excel.

Translation:

Do you want to save the changes you made to { ?
Microsoft Excel recalculates formulas when opening files last saved by an earlier version of Excel.

Note that there is a left brace character ({) where the workbook name is supposed to be.
