"The name could not be resolved" error message when you set up a new profile in Outlook 2000 with Corporate or Workgroup option

NOTE: The procedures in this article only apply if you have installed Outlook with the Corporate or Workgroup option. With this option, you can use Messaging Application Programming Interface (MAPI) services. To determine your installation type, click About Microsoft Outlook on the Help menu. If you have the Corporate or Workgroup installation, you see "Corporate or Workgroup".


SYMPTOMS

When you set up a new Outlook profile, you may receive the following error message:

The name could not be resolved. The Microsoft Exchange address book was unable to logon to the Microsoft Exchange Server computer.

-or-


The name could not be resolved. The name could not be matched to a name in the address list.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this behavior, remove and re-add Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) in the Local Area Connection properties, and then create a new profile. To do this:

  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  2. In Control Panel, double-click Network and Dial-Up Connections.
  3. Right-click Local Area Connection, and then click Properties.
  4. Click to clear the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) check box, and then click OK.
  5. Restart your computer.
  6. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  7. In Control Panel, double-click Network and Dial-Up Connections.
  8. Right-click Local Area Connection, and then click Properties.
  9. Click to select the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) check box, and then click OK.
  10. If you are prompted, restart your computer
  11. Create a new Outlook profile.
