SUMMARY

This article explains how to configure the Microsoft SideWinder game controllers listed at the beginning of this article to function properly in Nascar Racing 3 and Nascar 1999 by Sierra.

NOTE: Microsoft Windows 95 does not support Universal Serial Bus (USB) game controllers.

If your computer is running Microsoft Windows 95 or Microsoft Windows 98, Microsoft DirectX 7.0a or later must be installed on the computer.

To configure the game controllers listed at the beginning of this article to function properly in Nascar Racing 3 and Nascar 1999, use the following methods.

Make Sure That the Game Controller is Functioning in Windows

To make sure that the game controller is functioning properly in Windows, check the status of the game controller in the Game Controllers tool in Control Panel:

Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.




Double-click the Game Controllers icon.




Make sure that the status of the SideWinder game controller that you are using is displayed as OK.

If the game controller displays a status of Not Connected, click the article number below to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

Click the Advanced tab.




The SideWinder game controller that you are using must be listed next to Controller ID 1.

NOTE: If the game controller is not listed next to Controller ID 1:




  1. Under Controller ID Assignment, click the game controller listed next to Controller ID 1, and then click Change.
  2. In the Game Controllers box, click the SideWinder game controller that you are using, and then click OK.

Click OK.




Close all open windows on the desktop.




Calibrate the Wheel in Nascar Racing 3 or Nascar 1999

To calibrate the wheel in Nascar Racing 3 or Nascar 1999:

  1. Click Options, and then click Controls.
  2. Click Calibrate Joystick 1.
  3. Turn the wheel to the left and to the right, and then depress the accelerator and the brake pedals.
  4. Press ENTER to exit the calibration window.
  5. Click Calibrate Joystick 2.
  6. Depress the brake pedal and then press ENTER.
  7. If you are using Nascar Racing 3, click Customize Control.


If you are using Nascar 1999, click Set Controls.

  1. Click the symbol to the right of Steering.
  2. Turn the wheel to the left.


NOTE: If you turn the wheel to the right, the steering may be reversed.

  1. Click the symbol to the right of Acceleration.
  2. Depress the accelerator pedal.
  3. Click the symbol to the right of Braking.
  4. Depress the brake pedal.
  5. Click the symbol to the right of Shift Up.
  6. Press one of the buttons on the wheel to assign the Shift Up function.
  7. Click the symbol to the right of Shift Down.
  8. Press another button on the wheel to assign the Shift Down function.
  9. Click the symbol to the right of Reverse.
  10. Press another button on the wheel to assign the Reverse function.


NOTE: If you assign the same (joystick or keyboard) function to two different controls, you receive a "Conflicting Controls" error message when you exit the Controls screen. Make sure that you map all functions to different controls.

The buttons behind the wheel may not work unless they are mapped to Button 1 and Button 2 in the Sidewinder Profiler.

The SideWinder game controller should now function properly in the game.
