This article was previously published under Q268772

SYMPTOMS

If you select an HTML page as the background wallpaper for the Active Desktop, and you enable at least one desktop item, that page's onload event never fires. If you do not enable a desktop item, the problem does not occur.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Internet Explorer version 5.5. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

276369 How to Obtain the Latest Internet Explorer 5.5 Service Pack

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a bug in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was first corrected in Internet Explorer version 5.5 Service Pack 1.

MORE INFORMATION

You cannot force the onload event to fire without disabling all desktop items on the Active Desktop. When you write an Active Desktop background HTML page that must run on the released version of Internet Explorer 5.5, your script must assume that the onload event may not fire as expected.
