SYMPTOMS

After you grant new access rights to a folder by using Cacls, the following error message may be displayed if you use Windows Explorer to view the Security properties:

The Permissions on Folder are incorrectly ordered, which may cause some entries to be ineffective.

CAUSE

Cacls.exe should order Access Control Entries (ACEs) in an Access Control List (ACL) so that the Allow ACEs are placed before the Inherit ACEs in the ACL. Cacls does not perform any explicit ordering on these entries; if an Inherit ACE is listed before an Allow ACE, the ACL is deemed to be an invalid ACL.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Windows 2000. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was first corrected in Windows 2000 Service Pack 2.
