SUMMARY

This article provides general information about the Microsoft Outlook 2000 Collaboration Data Objects (CDO) 1.21 E-mail Security Update that was released on July 7, 2000.

MORE INFORMATION

Overview

The Outlook 2000 CDO E-mail Security Update provides additional levels of protection against malicious e-mail messages. The CDO object model allows other programs to automatically send mail without user intervention and allows other programs to gain access to address book information. This update restricts the way that other programs can use the CDO object model to send mail and gain access to address book information.

To download this update, view the following Microsoft Web site:

The CDO E-mail Security Update provides the same level of security and functionality as the Outlook E-mail Security Update, except that the CDO E-mail Security Update is for the CDO object model instead of the Outlook object model.

By default, Outlook and Microsoft Office 2000 do not install the CDO object model. It is an optional component that is not included in the typical setup procedure. If CDO is not installed on your computer, you do not need to install this update. If you are not sure if CDO is installed on your computer, you can either install the CDO E-mail Security Update, or you can search your hard disk for the Cdo.dll file to determine if it is installed before you run the update. If you install the update and CDO is not installed on your computer, the setup program does not do anything and the patch is not installed. However, if you later decide to install CDO, it is updated with this security update. After the CDO update is installed, the Cdo.dll file is dated 6/19/00.

Setup Issues

This section contains information that you should know before you install the CDO E-mail Security Update, and information about problems that you may have when you install the update.

Prerequisites

Before you install the CDO E-mail Security Update, you must install the Outlook SR-1a update, and then install the Outlook E-mail Security Update. The CDO E-mail Security Update uses the same warning messages as the Outlook E-mail Security Update, and therefore requires that you install the Outlook E-mail Security Update first. For more information about how to install these updates, view the following Microsoft Web site:

The CDO E-mail Security Update Should Not Be Applied to Servers

The CDO E-mail Security Update is designed specifically for use on typical client or end-user computers. Microsoft recommends that you do not apply the update to Microsoft Exchange Server-side versions of the CDO 1.21 library because this may severely impact both standard and custom server programs, including Outlook Web Access.

The CDO E-mail Security Update Should Not Be Applied to Outlook 98

The CDO E-mail Security Update is not available for Microsoft Outlook 98.

Setup Fails or Ends Unexpectedly if CDO Is Not Installed

If you do not have CDO installed on your computer, and you try to install the CDO E-mail Security Update, you are not prompted that the CDO is not installed or that the setup was completed successfully. If setup does not appear to do anything after it starts, CDO is not installed on your computer and can therefore not be updated.

If you do not have CDO installed on your computer, you do not need to install it unless a specific program requires it. Most of the programs that require CDO either install the CDO object model, or inform you that they require CDO to be installed. Microsoft does not recommend that you install CDO unless you have a specific reason to have it installed.

Setup Does Not Work or You Receive an "Unspecified Error" Error Message

If you cannot install the CDO E-mail Security Update, it is most likely because you tried to install it from the "Auto Update" section of Tools on the Web that is located on the following Microsoft Web page:

This Web page may report that the CDO E-mail Security Update was not installed successfully. However, if you verify that the date of the Cdo.dll file is 6/19/00, then CDO was updated correctly. If you have other problems when you install the update by using this Web site, you can also install the CDO E-mail Security Update from the following Tools on the Web site:

Developer Information

There are many versions and variations of CDO, and this update applies to only CDO version 1.21 that is installed by Microsoft Office 2000. This security update is not designed for other versions of CDO that are primarily for server use.
