SYMPTOMS

After you upgrade your computer to Microsoft Windows 98 and install Hewlett Packard (HP) DeskScan II ScanJet software, version 2.8 or version 2.9, over a previous version of HP DeskScan II ScanJet software or HP PictureScan software, the HP 5P ScanJet scanner hardware is not found.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, you must ensure that all previous versions of the HP scanner software are completely removed before you install a new version.

To remove and reinstall the HP DeskScan II software, version 2.8 or version 2.9, follow these steps:

  1. Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click Add/Remove Programs.
  2. On the Install/Uninstall tab, click HP DeskScan II or PictureScan, and then click Add/Remove.
  3. On the Confirm File Deletion warning, click Yes. When prompted to restart Microsoft Windows, click OK.
  4. Click Start, point to Programs, and then click Windows Explorer.
  5. In Windows Explorer, on the View menu, click Folder Options.
  6. In the Folder Options dialog box, click the View tab, and then clear the Hide extensions for known file types check box.
  7. Click Show all files. Click Apply, and then click OK.
  8. On the Tools menu, point to Find, and then click Files or Folders.
  9. In the Look in box, type:

    C:\

where C is letter of the hard disk drive.
  10. In the Named box, type in each of the following files individually. As each file is found, right-click the file and click Delete. On the Confirm File Delete message, click Yes.

    Hpscnmgr.dll
    Hpscntst.dll
    Hpsj32.dll
    Hpsjclas.dll
    Hpsj1695.dll
    Scanjet.inf
    Hpscnmgr.hlp
    Reg32.dll
    Hpsjrfsh.vxd
    Vhpscand.vxd
    Hpscaner.dll
    Aspi416.sys
    Mini400I.sys
    Sjiix.sys
Sym53416.* (remove up to 3 files)
Hpds23.ini (if HP DeskScan II was installed)
    Hpps32.ini (if PictureScan was installed)
Hpds23.ds (if HP DeskScan II was installed)
    Hpps32.ds (if PictureScan was installed)

  11. In Windows Explorer, delete the HP DeskScan or HP ScanJet folder (subdirectory) and all files contained in the folder. This is typically located in the C folder, unless the default directory changed during software installation.
  12. Close all active programs and reinstall HP DeskScan II version 2.8 or version 2.9. Restart the computer when the installation is complete.
  13. Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, double-click the System icon, and then click the Device Manager tab.
  14. If Other Devices is listed, click the plus sign. If HP SCSI Controller is below Other Devices, click it to highlight it. Click Remove.
  15. When you receive the Confirm Device Removal message, click OK, and then click Refresh.

Windows should report that new hardware is found and it should detect the SCSI Controller. Also, Windows may ask for the HP DeskScan II CD-ROM. You should ensure that the path is directed to D:\ (where D is the letter of your CD-ROM drive). After Setup finds the files, verify the scanner is connected and turned on, and then restart the computer. Windows should now detect the scanner and prompt for the WIN 98 CD-ROM. You must verify that the path is directed to D:\WIN98 (where D is the letter of your CD-ROM drive).

NOTE: If Windows prompts for the HP DeskScan II CD-ROM and not for the Windows 98 CD-ROM, cancel the installation and follow these steps:

  1. Click Start, point to Find, and then click Files or Folders.
  2. In the Look in: box, type

    C:\

where C is the letter of your hard disk drive.
  3. In the Named box, type

    Scanjet.inf

and click Find Now. If Scanjet.inf is found, right-click it, and then click Delete. On the Confirm File Delete message, click Yes.
  4. In the Named box, type:

    Hpscan.inf

and click Find Now. Right-click the file and click Install. Close the Find dialog box.
  5. Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, double-click the System icon, and then click the Device Manager tab.
  6. If either HP ScanJet Scanners or Other Devices or both are listed, click the plus sign.
  7. Click the entry below HP ScanJet Scanners or Other Devices, and click Remove. On the Confirm Device Removal message, click OK, and then restart the computer.

Windows should now prompt for the WIN98 CD-ROM and install the correct driver files for the scanner.

NOTE: If an error message appears that a file could not be found, be sure to direct the path to D:\WIN98 (where D is the CD-ROM).
