SYMPTOMS

When you try to start Microsoft MapPoint or Microsoft Streets and Trips for the first time, you may receive the following error message:

EULA Error

This application cannot display the End User License Agreement. This agreement must be displayed and accepted prior to running this application for the first time. Please reinstall the application you are trying to run.

RESOLUTION

Warning Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly by using Registry Editor or by using another method. These problems might require that you reinstall the operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that these problems can be solved. Modify the registry at your own risk.
To resolve this issue, use either of the following methods.

Method 1

Read the End User License Agreement for MapPoint or Streets and Trips, and then download and run the Steula.exe file:

  1. Quit all programs that are running on the computer.
  2. Click Start, and then click Run.
  3. In the Open box, type the appropriate line (including the quotation marks) for the program that you tried to start, and then click OK.

    Microsoft MapPoint 2001

    "drive:\program files\common files\microsoft shared\works shared\mpn8eula.txt"

    Microsoft MapPoint 2002

    "drive>:\program files\common files\microsoft shared\works shared\mpn9eula.txt"

    Microsoft Streets and Trips 2001

    "drive:\program files\common files\microsoft shared\works shared\stn8eula.txt"

    Microsoft Streets and Trips 2002

    "drive:\program files\common files\microsoft shared\works shared\stn9eula.txt"

    where drive is the drive letter of the hard disk on which Microsoft Windows is installed.

  4. Read the End User License Agreement (EULA) for the program that you want to install. If you agree to the terms in the EULA, proceed to the next step
  5. On the File menu, click Exit.
  6. Download and run the Steula.exe file.

    Note This file modifies the Microsoft Windows registry to indicate that you have accepted the End User License Agreement for the program.The following file is available for download from the Microsoft Download Center:

    Microsoft scanned this file for viruses. Microsoft used the most current virus-detection software that was available on the date that the file was posted. The file is stored on security-enhanced servers that help to prevent any unauthorized changes to the file.

Method 2

Only use this method if you cannot use Method 1. To edit the registry, follow these steps:

  1. Click Start, and then click Run.
  2. In the Open box, type regedit, and then click OK.
  3. Locate and click the following registry key:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Works Suite

  4. On a Microsoft Windows 98-based computer, on the Registry menu, click Export.

    On a Microsoft Windows XP-based computer, on the File menu, click Export.
  5. In the Save in box, select a location in which to save the .reg file, type a file name in the File name box, and then click Save.
  6. Delete the following registry key:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Works Suite

  7. Quit Registry Editor.
  8. Start Streets and Trips.
  9. Accept the End User License Agreement.
  10. Quit Streets and Trip.
  11. Double-click the file that you saved in step 5 to import the registry key that you deleted.


STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
