SYMPTOMS

When you create a Home Networking Wizard Setup disk in Windows Millennium Edition (Me) and then use the disk to run the Home Networking Wizard on a Windows 98 Second Edition-based computer, the installation may not be successfully completed. This behavior occurs when you are using one of the following network adapters in the Windows 98 Second Edition-based computer:

• Diamond Home Free
• D-Link DE-528CT 32-bit PCI Ethernet Adapter
• Realtek RTL8029(AS) PCI Ethernet Adapter
• NDC ND4300 PCI Ethernet Adapter
• Tredware RE-210CT PCMCIA Ethernet Adapter

RESOLUTION

To work around this issue and set up your home network, follow these steps:

1. Start the Home Networking Wizard on the Windows Me-based computer, and follow the Home Networking Wizard dialog boxes to set up your Home Network.
2. Start the Windows 98 Second Edition-based computer. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
3. In Control Panel, double-click Network.
4. In the Network dialog box, on the Configuration tab, add the following components to the Network Components list if they are not already listed:
   • Client for Microsoft Networks
     
     To install Client for Microsoft Networks, follow these steps:
     1. Click Add, then in the Select Network Component Type dialog box, click Client, and then click Add.
     2. In the Select Network Client dialog box, under Manufacturers, click Microsoft, then, under Network Clients, click Client for Microsoft Networks, and then click OK.
   • TCP/IP
     
     To install TCP/IP, follow these steps:
     1. Click Add, and then in the Select Network Component Type dialog box, click Protocol, and then click Add.
     2. In the Select Network Protocol dialog box, under Manufacturers, click Microsoft. Under Network Protocols, click TCP/IP, and then click OK.

   
   

5. In the Network Components list, click TCP/IP, and then click Properties.

   NOTE: If more than one TCP/IP item is listed, select the TCP/IP -> MyNetworkAdapter item.

6. In the TCP/IP Properties box, on the IP Address tab, click Specify an IP address.
7. In the IP Address box, type 192.168.0.2.

   NOTE: For each subsequent computer that you connect to your home network, you must specify a unique IP address. Use 192.168.0.3 as the IP address for the third computer, 192.168.0.4 for the fourth computer, and so on.

8. In the Subnet Mask box, type 255.255.255.0, then click OK.
9. Click File and Print Sharing. To let other computers on your home network access your files, click I want to be able to give others access to my files. To let other computers on your home network print to a printer connected to your Windows 98 Second Edition-based computer, click I want to be able to allow others to print to my printer(s). Click OK.
10. Click the Identification tab, and then in the Workgroup box, type the workgroup name that you used when you set up Home Networking on your Windows Me-based computer.
11. Click OK, and then follow the dialog boxes to restart your computer.
12. On your Windows 98 Second Edition desktop, double-click Network Neighborhood. If your Windows Me-based and your Windows 98 Second Edition-based computers are listed, then your Home Network has been set up successfully.

To set up Internet Connection Sharing on your Windows 98 Second Edition-based computer, follow these steps:

1. On the Windows 98 Second Edition-based computer, click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
2. In Control Panel, double-click Internet Options.
3. In the Internet Properties dialog box, click the Connections tab, and then click Setup.
4. In the Internet Connection Wizard, click I want to set up my Internet connection manually, or I want to connect through a local area network (LAN), and then click Next.
5. Click I connect through a local area network (LAN), and then click Next.
6. Click Use automatic configuration script, then in the Address box, type 192.168.0.1, and then click Next.
7. Click No, then click Next, and then click Finish.
