Third-Party Network Services Are Not Removed When You Upgrade Windows 95 to Windows Me

Article ID: 267001

Article Last Modified on 1/27/2007

APPLIES TO

  • Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition

This article was previously published under Q267001

SYMPTOMS

After you upgrade a computer that is running Microsoft Windows 95 original equipment manufacturer (OEM) Service Release 2 (R2) to Windows Millennium Edition (Me), a list of third-party network services that were installed with Windows 95 may be displayed.

In addition, when you double-click Network in Control Panel, click the Configuration tab, and then click Add, if you attempt to install a new service by double-clicking the service component, a list of services is displayed. However, not all of the services are available.

When you attempt to add a third-party service, the following behavior may occur:

  • A "copying files error" error message is displayed that states that the files that pertain to the service that you want to add could not be found in the specified location (This error message varies depending on the network service that you select).

-or-

  • When you click the network service that you want to add, and then click OK, you are returned to the Select Network Component Type dialog box, and the service is not installed.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs because the .inf files that are required for the third-party network services are not removed during the upgrade, but the files that are needed to install the service are not included with Windows Me.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, clear the services from the Networks tool that were installed before you upgraded to Windows Me:

  1. Double click My Computer, double-click the icon for drive C, and then double-click the Windows folder.
  2. Right-click the Inf folder, and then click Search.
  3. Type netservice in the Containing text box, and then click Search Now.
  4. Remove the Inf files that were installed before you upgraded to Windows Me, but make sure that you do not remove the following files:

    • Ndscli.inf - This file is for NetWare Directory Services.
    • Netdef.inf - This file is for the File and Print Sharing for the NetWare Networks service.
    • Netservr.inf - This file is for the File and Print Sharing for the Microsoft Networks service.

NOTE: Windows Me installs or updates these three network services.

To install a third-party network service, contact the manufacturer for the service to inquire about updated software for Windows Me.

MORE INFORMATION

If you complete the procedure in the "Resolution" section in this article and the network services information is still incorrect, force Windows to re-create the Driver Information database. To do this, remove the Drvdata.bin file and the Drvidx.bin file from the C:\Windows\Inf folder. The next time that you try to add any of the services, Windows re-creates this database, and you receive the following message:

Please wait while Windows builds a driver information database.
