Virtual Memory Reported Incorrectly in Windows 98 |
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Windows 98
- Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition
SYMPTOMS
When you change the virtual memory settings in System properties on a computer with a hard disk that uses the FAT32 file system, the amount of free hard disk space may be reported incorrectly if the disk contains more than 32 GB of free space. The free space may be reported as a negative number.
CAUSE
This behavior is caused by the way that Windows 98 handles the FAT32 file system. The ability to format a FAT32 drive with a larger than 32 GB partition has been removed from Microsoft Windows 2000 (you can use the NTFS file system instead). However, Windows 98 cannot use the NTFS file system.
WORKAROUND
You can still change the virtual memory settings. If you make the changes manually, the maximum and minimum free space are reported correctly.
