SYMPTOMS
The Modem Sharing client for Windows 2000 includes a Help file that outlines the procedure to add a new Modem Sharing port on Windows 2000. If you follow the steps to "Add a shared port" outlined in step 1 of the Help file, you receive the following error message:
CAUSE
This behavior occurs because Windows 2000 Professional does not include a Control Panel tool for communication ports (Ports.cpl). The steps outlined in the Help file are only for Microsoft Windows NT 4.0.
RESOLUTION
To correctly add a Small Business Server (SBS) Modem Sharing port to a Windows 2000 Professional-based computer, use the Netmodem tool (Netmodem.exe) that is included with the Windows 2000 Modem Sharing client.
To add a new modem sharing port, use the following steps:
- Click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then click OK.
- At the command prompt, type the following command

netmodem use * \\
servername\poolservernameis the SBS server, andpoolis the modem pool configured on the SBS server. - After you run the command, use the Hardware Wizard in Windows 2000 to install a modem on the new port:
- Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click Phone and Modem Options.
- On the Modem tab, click Add.
- Allow the wizard to detect your modem and install the drivers.
NOTE: You may have to manually add the drivers if the wizard does not detect the modem.
