XFOR: Non-Delivery Reports Generated When Sending E-Mail Through EDK Connectors in Exchange 2000 Server

Q265878

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server

SYMPTOMS

If you install two Exchange 2000 Server computers in the same Routing Group and one of the servers hosts an Exchange Development Kit (EDK) connector (for example, the Microsoft Exchange Connector for Lotus Notes or the Microsoft Exchange Connector for Novell GroupWise), when an e-mail message is sent from the server that does not host the EDK connector to a recipient who can only be reached through the EDK connector, the message may return the following non-delivery report (NDR):

From: postmaster@domain.com
To: sender@domain.com
Subject: Delivery Status Notification (Failure)

This is an automatically generated Delivery Status Notification.

Delivery to the following recipients failed.

IMCEANOTES-ChazUser_@domain.com

If you send the message to the same recipient from the server that hosts the EDK connector, the message is delivered with no problems.

CAUSE

This problem can occur because the routing mechanism in Exchange 2000 Server performs a Domain Name System (DNS) lookup by using a fully qualified domain name (FQDN) to obtain the Internet Protocol (IP) address of the server that hosts the EDK connector. EDK connectors do not have a FQDN, so a DNS query is sent for a resolution of the NetBIOS name of the server on which the EDK connector resides. The problem occurs if Windows Internet Naming Service (WINS) lookup is not enabled on the root "." domain in DNS. Because no WINS lookup is enabled, the NetBIOS name resolution does not work on the DNS server and the message returns an NDR.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, use one of the three following methods (listed in the order in which Microsoft recommends that you implement them if possible):

  • If a WINS server is available on the network, open the properties of the root "." domain in DNS Administrator, and then click the WINS tab. Click to select the Use WINS forward lookup check box, and then type the IP address (or addresses) of the WINS server.
  • If a WINS server is not available, open the properties of the root "." domain in DNS Administrator, and then click the WINS tab. Click to select the Use WINS forward lookup check box, and then type the IP address of the DNS server (for example, 127.0.0.1 works).
  • If you do not have access to the root "." domain of the DNS server, install the Exchange 2000 Server computer that hosts the EDK connector in a separate Routing Group.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server.
