New Features and Additions in Internet Explorer 5.5

Passive FTP UI Switch

Specifies to use passive FTP, which does not require your (local) computer to know its Internet IP address. Some network configurations only work with passive mode enabled, while others work only with passive mode disabled. This feature allows you to select which mode to use for compatibility with your network settings. Most network configurations support both modes. The passive FTP mode is considered more secure.

Printing Improvements

  • Print Preview

With Internet Explorer 5.5, you can now print-preview a Web page before you print it.

Security Improvements

  • Enhanced Encryption Strength
Internet Explorer 5.5 for Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows NT 4.0 and Windows 2000 now includes standard 128-bit encryption strength and supports the U.S. government standard for data encryption (DES). 128-bit Internet Explorer 5.5 is eligible for distribution to all users worldwide except in U.S.-embargoed destinations. New DHTML Support

Support for editable regions within an HTML document to provide you with full What You See Is What You Get (WYSIWYG) editing of rich HTML content.

Web pages can now be designed to render text vertically. This is especially desirable in markets where vertical-text display is important, as in Asian character sets.
  • Colored Scroll Bars
DHTML documents are no longer restricted to the Windows operating system standard of gray scrollbars. You can now specify the color of scroll bars by using style sheets.
  • HTML+Time
Timed Interactive Multimedia Extensions (HTML+Time) has been updated to version 2.0, and combines HTML layout with the timing, media, and animation.

For more information about HTML+Time, please view the following Microsoft Web site:
  • Transparent and Z-indexable Iframes

  • HTML Popup Objects
PopUp allows you to display HTML content outside the boundaries of the Internet Explorer window.

New CSS Styles

  • First-letter / First-line support

Text can now be created with first-letter, first-line support. This is similar to text that is used in newspapers.

  • Dotted and Dashed Borders

Boders can now be dashed and dotted.
