This article was previously published under Q265397

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to start the Microsoft Exchange 2000 Event Service, the following event may be logged in the Windows 2000 Application Event log:

Event ID : 5
Source : MSExchangeES
Type : Error
Category : General
Description : An unexpected MAPI error occurred. Error returned was [0x80004005]

CAUSE

There may exist more than one instance of the EventConfig_servername public folder for that Exchange 2000 server.

RESOLUTION

Delete both instances of the EventConfig_servername folder, and then restart the Event Service:

  1. Ensure that the Events.exe process is not running in Task Manager.
  2. In Exchange 2000 System Manager, view system folders. For additional information, click the article number below to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

  3. Rename one of the instances so that both can be deleted. If you try to delete one while a duplicate exists, you will get a warning informing you that you must rename one of the folders.
  4. Delete both instances of the EventConfig_servername folder.
  5. Restart the Event Service. This recreates a single instance of the EventConfig_servername.

MORE INFORMATION

All assigned rights and client permissions to the EventConfig public folder will be lost, and any scripts will be removed from the server.
