SYMPTOMS
When you attempt to start the Microsoft Exchange 2000 Event Service, the following event may be logged in the Windows 2000 Application Event log:
Event ID : 5
Source : MSExchangeES
Type : Error
Category : General
Description : An unexpected MAPI error occurred. Error returned was [0x80004005]
CAUSE
There may exist more than one instance of the EventConfig_servername
public folder for that Exchange 2000 server.
RESOLUTION
Delete both instances of the EventConfig_servername
folder, and then restart the Event Service:
- Ensure that the Events.exe process is not running in Task Manager.
- In Exchange 2000 System Manager, view system folders.For additional information, click the article number below to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

- Rename one of the instances so that both can be deleted. If you try to delete one while a duplicate exists, you will get a warning informing you that you must rename one of the folders.
- Delete both instances of the EventConfig_
servername
folder. - Restart the Event Service. This recreates a single instance of the EventConfig_
servername
.
MORE INFORMATION
All assigned rights and client permissions to the EventConfig public folder will be lost, and any scripts will be removed from the server.
