SYMPTOMS
When you double-click any footnote in your document to open it, the text for footnote number 1 opens. This occurs only if you created the footnotes during the current session of Word and then saved your document as Rich Text Format (RTF).

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was first corrected in Microsoft Office 2000 Service Pack 2.

Steps to Reproduce Problem
- In a blank new Word document, type =rand(150). Press ENTER.
- Select several areas of text, and add footnotes (press ALT+I,N). Add about five.
- Close the footnotes from the View menu.
- Save the document in Rich Text Format (RTF).
- Go to the last or next-to-last footnote in the text, and then double-click it.
Result: The first footnote opens.
