Extended Keys on a USB Keyboard May Not Function Correctly During Mini-Setup After Using Sysprep

SYMPTOMS

If the USB keyboard is not present during the original Plug and Play detection process, when a computer boots into mini-Setup after Sysprep is used, the USB keyboard is not correctly set up and the extended keys on the keyboard do not function correctly.

CAUSE

When a user plugs in a USB keyboard with shortcut buttons the first time, a service (Hidserv.exe) needs to be started. This is started by Hidserv.inf, which currently starts the service by using the Runonce key. This requires the user to reset the computer for the shortcut buttons to become functional.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Windows 2000. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was first corrected in Windows 2000 Service Pack 2.
