SYMPTOMS

When you try to install Visio 5.0 on a computer that is running Windows 2000, you may receive one of following errors:

Not Enough Disk Space

-or-

Out of Memory, The installation will not continue

NOTE: Visio 5.0 was released two years before Windows 2000 and was not specifically designed to run on Windows 2000. Minimal testing was done on Visio 5.0 when Windows 2000 was release, and Visio 5.0 was found to install and run without significant problems in most cases.

RESOLUTION

To install Visio 5.0 on a Windows 2000-based system, you must ensure the following:

  • You must be logged on as an Administrator or a user with sufficient permissions to install and uninstall software.
  • You must disable all other software applications. This includes antivirus software, all application programs, and any unnecessary system processes.

If these requirements are met, you can proceed with installing Visio 5.0 on a Windows 2000-based system.

NOTE: The following instructions are taken in part from the Network.txt file, which contains information about setting up Visio 5.0 on a network. To complete an installation on a Windows 2000-based system, a process similar to a network installation must be performed.

To Install Visio 5.0 on a Windows 2000-Based System

  1. Insert the Visio CD into the appropriate drive.
  2. Click Start, and then click Run.
  3. Click Browse, point to Setup.exe in the Install folder on the Visio CD, and then click Open.

NOTE: The location for Setup.exe is <cd>:\Install\Setup.exe. Do not run the Setup.exe file located in the root directory on the CD.

  1. In the Run dialog box, move the insertion point to the end of the Open box. The path displayed in the Open box should be similar to the path in step 3, except that the path is enclosed in quotation marks.
  2. To the right of the closing quotation mark, type a space, type /n, and then click OK.
  3. Follow the instructions on the screen to complete the installation.

Setup /n installs the Visio program files and also creates the following subfolders: Visio\System\Setup for workstation Setup files, and Visio\System\Shared for any Windows system and shared files required by Visio.

To Complete the Installation for Running Visio

The following process installs or updates any Windows system or shared files required by Visio and adds Visio to the Start menu:

  1. Click Start, and then click Run.
  2. Click Browse, point to Setup.exe in the Visio\ System\Setup folder on the hard disk, and then click Open.
  3. Click OK, and then follow the instructions on the screen.
