SYMPTOMS

German Word 2000 stops responding when you update the table of contents in a document, or when you update the table of contents in a document and then save the document using a new name. The exact text of the error message varies, depending on the operating system. On Microsoft Windows 2000 with Your locale (location) (in Regional Options on the General tab) set to English (United States), the message is

  • The original file name and the new name under which you want to save the document each contain at least 54 characters. If the option Hide file extensions for known file types in Windows Explorer is not selected, these 54 characters include the file extension and the period that precedes it.
