SYMPTOMS

When you start any of the programs listed in the "Applies to" section of this article, the program may quit unexpectedly without an error message.

CAUSE

This behavior may occur if both of the following conditions are true:

  • Your pointing device is attached to a Universal Serial Bus (USB) port in your computer.
  • The pointing device and your sound card share the same Interrupt Request (IRQ) setting.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, configure the sound card to use a different IRQ setting or use a pointing device that you can connect to a PS/2 or Serial port in your computer.

Note To determine if you can change the IRQ setting on your sound card, contact the sound card manufacturer or read the documentation that was provided with the sound card.

To manually change the IRQ for the sound card:

  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  2. Double-click System.
  3. On the Device Manager tab, expand Sound, video and game controllers.
  4. Double-click your sound card.
  5. On the Resources tab, click to clear the Use automatic settings check box.
  6. In the Resource type column, double-click Interrupt Request.

If you receive the following error message, click OK until you return to Control Panel, close Control Panel, and then contact the manufacturer of the sound card to determine if there is a resolution to this issue:

This resource setting cannot be modified.

  7. In the Value box, select an IRQ setting that does not conflict with another device.

Note A No devices are conflicting message is displayed under Conflict information when the IRQ setting that you select does not conflict with another device.
  8. Click OK until you return to Control Panel, and then close Control Panel.

If the program still does not function correctly, use a pointing device that you can connect to a PS/2 or Serial port in your computer.
