SYMPTOMS
When you try to open a link that does not contain information about the file that is being requested, you may receive the following error message:
Also, you may receive a message that redirects you to the MSDN online ActiveX Gallery to retrieve a third-party viewer.
CAUSE
This problem is caused by a request being made from the client to the Web server and the server replies with the Content-Type, Content-Length and the binary contents of the file. Internet Explorer attempts to determine the file extension of the requested data by parsing the URL. Because the URL does not contain the information on the file name Internet Explorer believes that there is no file extension and therefore fails to correctly determine if an ActiveX Control is installed to handle the Content-Type returned from the request.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Internet Explorer version 5.01. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was first corrected in Internet Explorer version 5.01 Service Pack 2.
