SYMPTOMS

Microsoft Word 2000 stops responding when you are performing basic operations such as opening a document that was created in Microsoft Word 95 or Microsoft Word 97, editing, counting words, or scrolling.

CAUSE

This problem occurs if all the following are true:

  • The document contains a bulleted or numbered list.
  • Track Changes is on.
  • A list item contains deleted text.
  • The deleted text is marked as hidden.


RESOLUTION

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was first corrected in Microsoft Office 2000 Service Pack 2.

Steps to Reproduce the Problem

  1. Start Word 2000 and open a new blank document.
  2. Type This is a test and then press ENTER.
  3. Click in the line of text, and then click the bullet icon.
  4. On the Tools menu, point to Track Changes, and then click Highlight Changes.
  5. Click to select Track changes while editing.
  6. Click Options.
  7. In the Track Changes dialog box, under Deleted text, in the Mark drop-down list, select Hidden.
  8. Click OK twice to return to the document.
  9. Select only the paragraph mark at the end of the text, and then delete the paragraph mark.


Result: Word stops responding. If you start Task Manager on Windows NT or Windows 2000 and look for the Winword.exe file on the Process tab, you see that Word is running and using CPU cycles.
