SYMPTOMS
A Microsoft Windows 2000-based domain controller may unexpectedly send Domain Name System (DNS) registration requests or queries for SRV records to an external DNS server. Other symptoms may include:
- Unexpected dial-out connections to an Internet Service Provider (ISP).
- Event ID 4011 messages.
- Event ID 5781 messages.
- The registration of internal names to an external DNS server.
CAUSE
This behavior can occur if a Windows 2000-based domain controller that has an external interface (such as a second network adapter, a remote access connection, or a dial-on-demand interface) has DNS server addresses defined for the interface or inherited from a remote access connection. This behavior may occur even though the Register this interface with DNS check box is not selected.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Windows 2000. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

This problem was corrected in Service Pack 1 for Windows 2000.
STATUS
Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was first corrected in Windows 2000 Service Pack 1.
