256986 Description of the Microsoft Windows Registry

SYMPTOMS

When you try to install one of the components in Microsoft Works Suite, you may receive the following error message

Error: 1327 Invalid Drive:drive:\

where drive is the drive letter of the CD-ROM drive.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if the CD-ROM drive letter has changed since you originally installed Works Suite. For example, the letter for your CD-ROM drive may change after you install a second hard disk or a ZIP drive.

Additionally, this behavior can occur if Microsoft Works has been previously installed and removed from your computer.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, delete the Works Suite registry keys from the Microsoft Windows Registry.

WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

  1. Click Start, and then click Run.
  2. In the Open box, type regedit, and then click OK.
  3. Delete both of the following registry keys:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Works
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Works Suite

NOTE: When you are prompted to confirm each key deletion, click Yes.
  4. Quit Registry Editor, and then restart the computer.
