SYMPTOMS

After a computer resumes from hibernation, Universal Serial Bus (USB) devices may be missing. Device Manager may no longer list the connected USB devices.

CAUSE

When the computer resumes from hibernation, Windows 2000 issues a global reset and then a port reset to the USB controller. During this initialization, the port reset may not succeed and the USB controller may becomes unresponsive to any commands issued to it. This behavior may occur if the motherboard uses the 440BX/443BX chip set with the PIIX4(E) chip set.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Windows 2000. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

The English version of this fix should have the following file attributes or later:

Date Time Version Size File name
   ----------------------------------------------------
   12/5/2000 07:02p 5.0.2195.3055 32,272 Uhcd.sys

NOTE: There are various USB devices (mouse, keyboard) that may be unresponsive when the computer "wakes" from hibernation mode. In this case, the system will have to be restarted completely (turn off power and turn back on).

STATUS

This behavior is not caused by a problem in Windows 2000. This hotfix is a workaround for computers that experience this condition. This problem was first corrected in Windows 2000 Service Pack 2.
