You may receive an error message that indicates the Mapi32.dll file is missing, damaged, or the wrong version. The error message that you receive may be similar to the following error message:

Cannot start Microsoft Outlook. Mapi32.dll is corrupt or the wrong version. This could have been caused by installing other messaging software. Please reinstall Outlook.

This article describes how to replace the Mapi32.dll file.

MORE INFORMATION

To replace the Mapi32.dll file:

  1. Quit Outlook.
  2. Click Start, point to Find, and then click Files or Folders.
  3. In the Named box, type mapi32.dll.
  4. In the Look in box, click My Computer, and then click Find Now.
  5. In the search results list, right-click Mapi32.dll, and then click Rename.
  6. Type Mapi32.old, and then press ENTER. If there are multiple copies of the Mapi32.dll file in the list, rename each copy.

For information about how to copy files, click Start, click Help, click the Index tab, type copying, and then click the appropriate Help topic.

When you start Outlook, the program checks for necessary files. If the Mapi32.dll file is missing, the Mapistub.dll file is used instead. If the Mapistub.dll file cannot be found, Setup automatically replaces both files.

NOTE: When you start Outlook, if you are prompted to replace missing files, click Yes. This operation requires access to an installation CD or a network installation point.
