SYMPTOMS
After you install a dial-on-demand (DOD) interface for Routing and Remote Access Service (RRAS) in Windows 2000 and allow the interface to receive an autonet Automatic Private IP Addressing (APIPA) address (169.254.x.x), NetBT broadcasts to 169.254.255.255 may periodically connect the DOD interfaces.
CAUSE
The subnet mask of the DOD interface is set to 255.255.0.0 when you use autonet addresses. This allows NetBT broadcasts to be sent to 169.254.255.255, which connects the DOD interfaces.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Windows 2000. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

STATUS
Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Microsoft Windows 2000.
This problem was first corrected in Windows 2000 Service Pack 1.
