SYMPTOMS

After you upgrade to Windows 98, your infrared devices may not work and you may receive the following error message:

Error 24. Your infrared software encountered an internal error. Please restart Windows.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if the Irenum.vxd, Infrared.dll, Ircomm.dll, Irmon.exe, or Infrared.inf file is not the correct version.

RESOLUTION

WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

To resolve this issue:

  1. Rename the following files and then extract new versions from the Windows 98 CD-ROM:

    Irenum.vxd
    Infrared.dll
    Ircomm.dll
    Irmon.exe
    Infrared.inf

For additional information about how to extract files, click the article number below to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

  2. Restart your computer in Safe mode.
  3. In Device Manager, remove all drivers listed under Infrared Devices.
  4. Remove Virtual Infrared Com Port and Virtual Infrared LPT Port under Ports.
  5. Delete the history information for infrared in the registry. Delete any subkeys under:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Class\Infrared

Do not delete the key itself or any values directly under the key; remove subkeys such as 0000, 0001, and so on.

  6. Restart the computer normally. Windows then enumerates the infrared port again.
