SYMPTOMS
In some cases, when you perform certain actions, you may receive the following error message:
where filename
is the name of the program that you are attempting to start.
This error message has been reported to occur in the following cases:
Case 1
When you click Help in a program.
For example, when you click either Microsoft Word Help on the Help menu or click Microsoft Word Help on the Standard toolbar.
Case 2
When you attempt to start the Microsoft Software Development Network (MSDN) Library.
Case 3
After you customize Outlook Today and restart Microsoft Outlook 2000.
Case 4
When you try to start Microsoft Internet Explorer 5. This problem may also occur when you try to install Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.
CAUSE
These problems can occur when an earlier version of the Comctl32.dll file is installed on your computer.
RESOLUTION
To correct these problems, update the Comctl32.dll file to a later version by using one of the following methods:
Method 1: Download and Install the Latest Version of Microsoft Internet Explorer
To update your version of Microsoft Internet Explorer, do one of the following:
- Click Start and then click Windows Update.
-or- - Start Microsoft Internet Explorer. On the Favorites menu, point to Links, and then click Windows Update.
-or- - Start Microsoft Internet Explorer and browse to the following Microsoft Web site:
Method 2: Download and Install the 50Comupd.exe File
To obtain a later version of the Comctl32.dll file, download and install the 50Comupd.exe file.
Visit the following Microsoft Web site and download the appropriate file for your computer:
NOTE: You must take special care to avoid inadvertently installing any component that is intended for one operating system onto another. This can cause unpredictable results and is a direct violation of Microsoft licensing agreements. For further information about redistribution, refer to the End-User License Agreement (EULA) packaged with the Microsoft product.
Method 3: Copy the Comctl32.dll File from Another Computer
Copy the Comctl32.dll file version 5.8 or later from a different computer of the same operating system (OS) to the computer that is experiencing any of the problems listed in the "Symptoms" section of this article.

To determine the version of the Comctl32.dll file that is installed on your computer, follow these steps:
NOTE: Because there are several versions of Microsoft Windows, the following steps may be different on your computer. If they are, see your product documentation to complete these steps.
- Click Start, point to Find, and then click Files or Folders.
NOTE: In Microsoft Windows 2000, click Start, point to Search, and then click For Files or Folders.
- Change the Look in box to your local hard disk drive. For example, change the Look in box to either (C:) or Local Harddrives (C:;D:).
- In the Named box, type Comctl32.dll and then click Find Now.
NOTE: In Microsoft Windows 2000, in the Search for files or folders named box, type Comctl32.dll and then click Search Now.
- After the Comctl32.dll file is found, click to select Comctl32.dll. On the File menu, click Properties.
- Click the Version tab.
