SYMPTOMS

Site Server 3.0 Service Pack 3 and the Indexing Service that is included in Windows 2000 fail to index HTML files encoded in the UTF-8 character set that contain a meta tag similar to the following:

<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=UTF-8">
                


Also, these documents do not appear as unfiltered documents.

RESOLUTION

A supported fix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Apply it only to computers that are experiencing this specific problem. This fix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, Microsoft recommends that you wait for the next Windows NT, Windows 2000, or Site Server service pack that contains this hotfix.

WORKAROUND

Use the Nlhtml.dll file that is included in Site Server 3.0 Service Pack 2. This version works correctly.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
