SYMPTOMS

If a Microsoft Windows NT 4.0-based server has support for Server Message Block (SMB) signing turned on, a Windows 2000-based client may have problems connecting to it. If the initial attempt to connect is made with an invalid password, the error message "Network name is no longer available" is returned rather than a prompt to enter the correct password.

CAUSE

The redirector in Windows 2000 returns an incorrect error code if an attempt to connect to a server with SMB signing turned on does not succeed. The cause of this problem is on the Windows 2000-based client, not the Windows NT 4.0-based server.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Windows 2000. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

WORKAROUND

Possible workarounds for this problem:

  • Turn off SMB signing on the Windows NT 4.00-based server.
  • Ensure that a valid password is supplied on the initial attempt to connect to the server.
  • Disable "Digitally sign client communication" (when possible) in the local policy of the computer.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was first corrected in Windows 2000 Service Pack 2.
