256986 Description of the Microsoft Windows Registry

SYMPTOMS

After you remove Internet Explorer 5.5 and you then reinstall Internet Explorer 5.0, you may receive one of the following error messages:

EXPLORER caused an exception 6d007fh in module WEBCHECK.DLL at 015f:78b32599

IEXPLORE caused a General Protection Fault in module Webcheck.dll

CAUSE

A change was made in Internet Explorer 5.5 to the installation of the Mobile Offline pack. (Installing the Mobile Offline pack also installs the Webcheck.dll file.) The Save and Restore entries for the Mobile Offline pack GUID were added under the Active Setup\Installed Components registry branch. After you remove Internet Explorer 5.5, the registry key remains. If you then reinstall Internet Explore 5.0, Internet Explorer Setup checks the Installed Components entries for the Mobile Offline pack, finds the Internet Explore 5.5 value, and behaves as if the Mobile Offline pack is installed. Therefore, the Mobile Offline pack is not installed again.

RESOLUTION

WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

To resolve this issue, remove the registry key that contains the GUID for the Mobile Offline Pack:

  1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.
  2. Locate the following registry key:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Active Setup\Installed Components

  3. Right-click the following key, and then click Delete:

    {3af36230-a269-11d1-b5bf-0000f8051515}

  4. Quit Registry Editor.

WORKAROUND

If you install the same version of Internet Explorer 5.0 that was installed before you installed Internet Explorer 5.5, you can run Internet Explorer 5.0 Setup again, click the Custom installation option, and then select Offline Browsing Pack to reinstall the Webcheck.dll file.
